What is VIP?

VIP, vasoactive intestinal peptide, is a natural peptide of 28 amino acids. Sami Said and Viktor Mutt found it in 1970 in the small intestine, named for its effect on blood vessels. It turned out to be made by nerves throughout the body, including the brain.

How does VIP work?

• VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors: VIP switches on these two receptors, shared with its relative PACAP.
• Relaxing muscle: it widens blood vessels and opens airways.
• Calming inflammation: it dampens immune activity.
• The body clock: in the brain’s master clock it helps keep cells in sync.
