Snap-8

What is Snap-8?

Snap-8 is a lab-made peptide of eight amino acids, acetyl octapeptide-3 (Ac-EEMQRRAD-NH2). It is a longer version of Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3), with two more amino acids added.

Both copy the end of SNAP-25, a protein nerves need to release the signal that makes muscles contract.

How does it work?

• SNARE complex: to release a signal, nerve endings build a protein bundle called the SNARE complex, with SNAP-25 as one part.
• A decoy: Snap-8 mimics part of SNAP-25 and competes with it, so fewer complexes form.
• Expression lines: less signal means less contraction in the small facial muscles behind expression lines. Argireline was designed to copy this effect of botulinum toxin without its toxicity.
