About This Product

What is thymosin alpha-1?

Thymosin alpha-1 is a peptide of 28 amino acids with an acetyl group at its start (SDAAVDTSSEITTKDLKEKKEVVEEAEN). It was first isolated from thymus tissue, the organ where T cells mature. Its drug name is thymalfasin, sold as Zadaxin in a number of countries in Asia and Europe, though not approved in the US.

How does it work?

  • Dendritic cells: it switches on these immune “sentinel” cells through toll-like receptors.
  • T cells: it steers the immune response toward Th1, the arm that fights viruses and intracellular infections.
  • Balance: reviews describe it as a regulator, raising some responses and calming others.

What do researchers study it for?

  • Immune response and vaccine research
  • Viral infection models
  • Immune function in critical illness and sepsis
  • Comparisons with Thymalin and with TB-500, a different thymosin
