What is 5-Amino-1MQ?

5-Amino-1MQ is a small lab-made molecule, not a peptide: 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium (C10H11IN2, the iodide salt). It blocks an enzyme called NNMT, nicotinamide N-methyltransferase, which is very active in fat tissue.

How does it work?

• NNMT: this enzyme tags nicotinamide with a methyl group and sends it out of the cell.
• More NAD+: blocking it leaves more nicotinamide to make NAD+, a key coenzyme for energy use.
• Fat cells: in obese mice, blocking NNMT limited fat gain and improved insulin sensitivity and fatty liver.
