About This Product

What is Semax?

Semax is a lab-made peptide of seven amino acids (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro). It is built from a piece of ACTH, the stress hormone, but the piece used (positions 4 to 7) has no hormonal effect. A Pro-Gly-Pro tail protects it from breakdown.

It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow and is used in Russia as a nasal drop. Elsewhere it is a research compound.

How does Semax work?

  • BDNF: in rats it raised BDNF and its receptor, TrkB, in the hippocampus. BDNF helps nerve cells grow and form new connections.
  • Nerve growth factors: it changes NGF and BDNF gene activity over hours in several brain areas.
  • Brain protection: in rats with blocked blood flow to the brain, it shifted brain proteins toward protection.

What do researchers study it for?

  • Memory and learning models
  • Stroke and brain-injury models
  • BDNF and neuroplasticity
  • Comparisons and pairings with Selank, its sister peptide
