About This Product

What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II (MT-2) is a lab-made peptide based on alpha-MSH, the hormone that darkens skin. Its seven amino acids are closed into a ring by a lactam bridge, which makes it far more potent and stable than alpha-MSH. Researchers at the University of Arizona developed it in the 1990s.

It has never been approved as a medicine.

How does it work?

  • MC1R: on pigment cells, it raises melanin, the pigment that darkens skin.
  • MC4R: in the brain, it affects appetite and sexual function.
  • Not selective: it acts on most melanocortin receptors at once, which is why PT-141, its MC4R-leaning relative, was developed from it.

What do researchers study it for?

  • Melanocortin receptor pharmacology
  • Pigmentation and melanin production
  • Appetite and energy balance through MC4R
  • Comparisons with PT-141 and Melanotan 1
