About This Product

What is hCG?

hCG, human chorionic gonadotropin, is the hormone the placenta makes in early pregnancy. It is a glycoprotein of about 38 kDa: an alpha subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a beta subunit of its own. Sugar chains cover much of it.

How does hCG work?

  • LH receptor: it binds the same receptor as LH, the LH/CG receptor, in the testes and ovaries.
  • Longer lasting: its extra sugar chains slow clearance, so it acts far longer than LH.
  • Steroid production: on that receptor it drives testosterone and progesterone production.

What do researchers study it for?

  • LH receptor signalling and steroid production
  • Ovarian and testicular function
  • Comparisons with gonadorelin and kisspeptin-10, which act higher up the chain
  • Pairing with hMG in reproductive models
